The ‘Cambrian Rail Tour’ approaches Afon Wen station in the summer of 2007. At the head of the train was locomotive No. 44871. It was built in March 1945 at Crewe works for the LMS. One of the very successful Stanier Black Fives, it lasted to the end of steam. When it was withdrawn from 10A, Carnforth shed, in August 1968 it had just hauled a leg of 1T57, the ‘Fifteen Guinea Special’ double-heading with classmate 44781. The ‘Fifteen Guinea Special’ was the last steam-hauled standard gauge train run by British Railways. No. 44871 was lucky enough to be sold on to preservation.
