Station Name: ALLERTON

In the late 1950s the English Electric Companies demonstrator diesel locomotive 'Deltic' is seen just to the south of Allerton station heading northwest towards Liverpool. 'Deltic' was the prototype demonstrator loco using a Deltic engine built in 1955. This loco resulted in 22 similar locos being ordered by BR and became class 55. In March 1961, 'Deltic' was withdrawn after a serious engine failure and it became part of the National Collection, first being on display at the Science museum in London and now at the National Railway Museum..
