Station Name: ANN STREET

Looking north towards the site of Ann Street Halt in 1976. The photographer is standing on the trackbed of the original Widnes and St Helens railway which opened in February 1833. The section of line from Ann Street to Widnes Dock was closed in November 1968 and lifted shortly afterwards. The DMU in the picture is coming down the spur which led up to the Garston and Warrington deviation line of 1869. This train would have passed through the site of Ann Street Halt which was located on the other side of the bridge. Widnes Locomotive Sheds had been located on the other side of the concrete fence to the left of the DMU until their closure in 1964.
