Station Name: BACKWORTH (2nd)

The north-eastern end of Backworth station seen from the down platform. The overtrack timber building was constructed in 1885 and served both as a booking hall and footbridge. In the 1920s the short extension was added to the left. Two types of platform seating are visible, the closer one being the NER’s ubiquitous coiled serpent style. In this view from June 1967 the LNER platform lighting is still in place, with a recently-added BR totem sign on one of the standards.
