Station Name: BACKWORTH (2nd)

A useful view of the former booking office building on the up platform, looking south in June 1967. The single-storey brick structure has closely set twin pavilions containing waiting rooms, each with stone bay windows projecting onto the platform, and topped with stone finials. A short awning links the pavilions, and a shed has been added to the left. An LNER ‘mint imperial’ lamp and a BR(NE) totem can be seen, and the notice boards all carry posters; perhaps the vigilance of the author’s cousin, who supervised the station and was later to become a policeman, ensured that they remained free of graffiti!
