Barcombe Gallery 3 April 1969 - c1971

Barcombe station looking north-west from the road bridge in April 1969. Note the fence across the track beyond the station. This and the Bedford lorry owned by JW Turner parked in front of the station suggests that the building might have a new occupant.

Barcombe station looking north-west along the platform in September 1969. There is no obvious evidence of any work taking place and the platfoirm is getting very overgown although the building remains in reasonable condition. The section with aq flat roof closest to the camera is the gents' toilet.

The usual view from the bridge looking north-west in September 1969. Platform edge stones appear to have been removed. A car is seen on the station forecourt once again suggesting the building might have a new occupant.

The disused Barcombe station from the forecourt c1971. Messrs. V. C. Turner of Brighton did, however, thoughtfully park their Ford D Series lorry in view of the camera; this is a different lorry to that seen in 1969. Its registration number dated from June 1967. The photograph offers, despite the dereliction, a good idea of the station building's architecture. Elaborate, some may say over elaborate, it was typical of the East Grinstead - Lewes line and not untypical of the LB&SCR in general. Above the double window of the single storey ticket office are two panels. That on the left bore the railway company initials in scripted, monogram form while that on the right bore the date '1882' and is just visible. Ma\ny of the windows are boarded up with little sign of vandalism. The station was to spend many more years derelict before being superbly restored as a private house while similar, restored, stations can be seen on the heritage Bluebell Railway.

By c1971 the station building although intact was in a very delapidated state. The end of the building with the flat roof was the gents' toilet; one door leading to a urinal and the other to WC cubiccles.

The poor condition of the station building is clear in this c1971. Manyof the roof tiles on the ladies waiting room are broken. Lower floor windows are generally boarded up while those on the upper floor are now glassless.
