Class J20/1 0-6-0 64697 heads a down military stores train on the main line between Barnwell Junction station, left, and goods yard, right. On the left the back of the down platform waiting room is seen; the appendage on its rear was either a lavatory or, more likely, a coal store. The waiting room had two fireplaces, one at each end. Class J20 was a GER Hill design and 64697 was new to traffic on 1 January 1923 - the first day of the LNER. At the time of the photograph she was a March locomotive. Withdrawal came in September 1961, by which time she was allocated to Stratford. She is in early British Railways livery, with name in full on the tender, but would not gain a smokebox shedplate for a further two years - these not being introduced until 1950.
