Belford Station Station Gallery 3: 1970 - March 1980

Belford station building looking north-east across the forecourt in 1970. The station has been closed to all traffic for two years but the building remains in good condition.

Belford station looking north-west c1970. The station has been closed to passengers since January 1968. The platforms and buildings are still in place, and the only evidence that the station is disused is the absence of lamps on the platform.

Looking north-west from the level crossing at Belford c1972. The modern signal box (1962) with its clean lines is accompanied by modern crossing ‘booms’ which replaced the traditional gates in 1966. The station’s up passenger platform, formerly to the right of the main line tracks, and the goods warehouse have recently been demolished, the footbridge has been dismantled and the down platform has been cut back. Thankfully the station building has been spared.

Looking south-east from an up train passing through the disused Belford station on 7 September 1972. Although the platform has been cut back and the footbridge removed, the station building, timber lock-up shed, signal box and water tank remain.

Looking south in 1976 at Belford station. The up platform used to stand between the siding in the foreground and the main line tracks. The edge stones of the down platform have been removed and the infill graded to prevent it from collapsing onto the rails. The station building is intact, accompanied by the timber lock-up shed and the 1962 signal box. The water tank, which stood beyond the level crossing, has been demolished.

In this undated (c1970s) view of Belford, looking north-west, a Class 40 is heading an up train past the main building of the former station. It is possibly empty stock as the first coach is a TPO (Travelling Post Office). The gap between the photographer and the main line tracks was formerly occupied by sidings and the up passenger platform.

In September 1978 Class 55 ‘Deltic’ No.55006 ‘The Fife and Forfar Yeomanry’ races past the site of Belford station on the 15:10 Edinburgh to London Kings Cross. The station building is on the left. This class of 22 locomotives was built in 1961-62 and performed sterling service hauling expresses on the East Coast main line for about 20 years. No.55006 was withdrawn on 8 February 1981 and was scrapped at BREL Doncaster in July 1981.

Belford station building, looking west in September 1978. The fine sandstone edifice is accompanied by a humble lock-up shed, repainted in grey to replace the BR(NE) ‘Oriental Blue’. The nameboard stanchions are still in place. The station building is dwarfed by the huge silo on the far right

Belford station building viewed across the forecourt in September 1978. The building remains in use and is well preserved. The succession of views of the forecourt enables us to study the changing styles and fashions of motor vehicles!

The minor ancillary buildings on station sites sometimes outlive the major structures, but are seldom photographed. All credit to this photographer who has recorded the coal weigh office and adjacent buildings on the down side of main line at Belford in March 1980. It was not unusual for a former station coal depot to remain in use, operated privately and supplied by road, after delivery of
coals by rail had ceased.
