On 27 July 1977 an evening DMU bound for Newcastle (direct) enters the up platform of Benton station, and passes under the NER cast iron footbridge. The unconventional placing of the BR(NE) running-in board was an act of kindness by the booking clerk, who retrieved it from storage on the station for the photographer’s amusement.
