Station Name: BENTON (2nd)

Looking north-east from Benton station footbridge in 1959. Beyond the signal box, cantilevered out above its base, the three-way junction can be seen. The line ahead (electrified with third rails) is to Backworth and the coast. Diverging to the right, and also electrified, is the south-west curve giving access to the East Coast main line at Benton Quarry. This was used for empty electric stock movements, whilst ‘express’ electric trains between Newcastle and the Coast via Backworth used the south-east curve (not seen in this view) and the East Coast main line through Heaton. The pair of tracks heading left (not electrified) are the north-west curve to the main line, opened as a wartime emergency route in 1940, and used by a few Newcastle – Alnmouth trains, which called at
Benton, from 1971 until 1976.
