Looking north-east towards the station building at Boldon Colliery in the 1960s. It was designed by the noted architect G T Andrews and was constructed in 1844 of local sandstone. The down platform of the Sunderland – Newcastle line is on the far side of the stone building, and the timber shed to the left is also on that platform. For a short time the ‘Old Main Line’ from Leamside curved tightly from (West) Boldon towards Pelaw through the foreground of this view, and there was probably a platform here. The station building is aligned to serve both routes. The elegant entrance porch is midway along the west elevation, and the later timber shed has been added uncomfortably close to it. A typical Andrews’ bay window is on the near side, and a similar one faces the platform used by
Sunderland to Newcastle trains.
