As photographs show, after closure Stellwerk W1 was partially stripped of equipment but the level frame remained in situ seen in March 2023. Outside, the cable tensioning equipment was removed, perhaps for reuse elsewhere, and what we see here is the framework carrying cable pulleys, the tensioning equipment being positioned above it. In comparison with the view showing the latter in situ, it would appear the pulley framework was positioned just below ground level and in this view it had been extracted. The smaller frame, nearer to the track, would have held further pulleys to turn the cables through 90 degrees before routing them through the lineside conduit.

Colditz W1 signal box in March 2023. German mechanical signal boxes use cables for both signals and points whereas Britain used/uses rodding for points. In Germany, where points and/or signals were a distance from the box these hand cranks were used instead of levers. However, these two cranks standing side by side may indicate they operated the level crossing barriers.

Colditz W1 signal box in March 2023. Route setting levers and interlocking equipment. It is incomplete and should have an indicator panel about it.There is an annotated (in English) photograph on German Block and Interlocking Principles on web site that explains the eqauipment found in German signal boxes.

Points lever frame in March 2023, showing cable going down below the floor. It no doubt controlled the siding(s) serving the agricultural warehouse opposite the box. The small horizontal lever would have been something to do with interlocking. This was a Type W1 'box, meaning it was secondary to the main box, which was a Type B2, and dependent upon it

After standing empty and unused for many years restoration work on the building is at last underway. It is now fenced and the rubbish chute dangling out of the window indicates recent activity.
