Here is preserved Deutsche Reichsbahn (more correctly Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft and commonly abbreviated to DRG) Class 86 No. 86 001 at Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf on 1 August 2005. Built between 1928 and 1943 the 776-strong class was intended for branch line work and predominantly goods traffic but could also appear on passenger workings. Most class members were Einheitsdampflokomotive, meaning a Standard Steam Locomotive, but later builds from 1942 onwards were a simplified wartime version referred to as Übergangskriegslokomotive and commonly abbreviated to "UK". This is why some German steam locomotives have "UK" after their numbers on paper, "UK" not being displayed on locomotive numberplates. No. 86 748 seen in the background in the previous view of Colditz was one of these "UK" locomotives. All had been retired from normal service by the Reichsbahn by 1974. A few went to Austria and Poland and number are preserved of which nine remain in Germany.
