In 1920, when this photograph was taken, Bath Road was still relatively quiet. In later years it became so busy that the signalman was allowed to keep road traffic flowing even though 'train entering section' had been received in the box. Traffic was allowed to cross for a further five minutes after notice of an approaching passenger train had been received. For an up freight train it was six minutes and eight minutes for a down freight. The instructions did not apply to flocks of animals or traction engines, which were not allowed to cross until 'line clear' had been given by the signalman. Eventually a by-pass was built, and the road is once again relatively quiet.
