Station Name: CONSETT

Near the bottom of the bank stands Consett East signal box. Sadly derelict in this view but still with its frame and proudly showing its typical North-Eastern Railway appearance its bleak location can be appreciated in this snowy picture. At one time the first siding to the works went off to the right from here and a line from the Knitsley Lane Coke works passed beneath the mainline. The signal box controlled the connection to the steelworks via the lower yard with what became the Hownes Gill branch carrying straight on down the valley. March 1984.
