Not only had the station recently been painted in tasteful colours, but Mozart’s 40th Symphony was being broadcast on the public address system to entertain and edify passengers. It was a much more pleasant experience to wait for a train on that occasion than in later BR days when the station was grubby and gloomy. Photo by Alan Young
