The two single-track Standedge Tunnels, looking north-east from the site of Diggle station in 1992. The earliest Standedge railway tunnel is immediately right of the water tank, carrying a single track; it opened in 1849 and was known by railwaymen as the ‘Nicholson Tunnel’. Its profile is straight sidewalls with arch. To its right is the ‘Nelson Tunnel’, opened in 1871 and of the same profile as its neighbour. Both tunnels closed in 1966, since when all traffic has used the newer double-track tunnel.
