Station Name: DIGGLE

A passable track is directly above the Standedge Tunnels’ portals at Diggle. This view (October 2015) is looking west from above the old Nicholson Tunnel portal – the first railway tunnel under Standedge (1849) and, like its twin Nelson Tunnel (1871), out of use since 1966. The trackbed of the up fast line that passed through the tunnel can be seen lower left. The former island platform of Diggle station occupied the central part of this picture in the area now colonised by trees. The water tank which supplied the troughs in the tunnels is seen on the right, its red-brick base daubed with graffiti. The double-track route of the Huddersfield-Manchester line is out of sight this side of the distant stone retaining wall of Harrop Court Road.
