Looking north-east from the up platform of Durham in 1956 as a named express takes the fast line though the station. No. 60068, the loco seen here, was originally built as an A1 for the LNER in 1924 named ‘Sir Visto’ and entered service on 14 August at Edinburgh Haymarket shed. This Gresley design was renumbered 68 by the LNER in 1946, then renumbered and rebuilt as an A3 in 1948. Withdrawn on 27 August 1962 from Carlisle Canal shed, it was broken up later that month.
