The frontage of the original 1857 station building looking west in June 1964. The dignified stone building with its arched portico is accompanied on the right by a less refined structure from 1872 which housed a ramped entrance to the up platform and was removed a few years later when ‘modernisation’ work was done. The tall chimneystacks which are such a distinctive feature of the main building were cut down in the modernisation work but have subsequently been restored.
