In this undated view looking east, the south-western end of Durham station platforms are on the left; the hipped roof of the south signal box is in the foreground; and the north-eastern end of the railway viaduct is to the right. The spectacular setting of Durham’s cathedral and the castle, soaring above the River Wear’s deep valley, can be appreciated. Railways never penetrated the city centre because of the steep topography and the densely built-up and historic nature of the site.
