In July 2013 the down (north-west) platform at Durham retains its 1871-2 buildings and glazed verandah. Note the attractive design in the stonework at the top of the bay. The photographer is standing on the site of the Sunderland departure bay looking at the W.H.Smith & Sons wholesale newspaper distribution centre which closed when the railways lost the newspaper contracts.
