Station Name: DURHAM GILESGATE

[Source: Alan Young]

Looking north-east from Durham Gilesgate station in June 1968. The station had closed to passengers as early as 1857 but remained in goods use until November 1966. The rails, sleepers and ballast have been removed with indecent haste leaving the ill-drained trackbed. One of the lamps that formerly lit the sidings remains in place. The A690 road now follows the trackbed north out of Durham.
