Eastwood Station Gallery 3: 1972 - May 2015

The disused station at Eastwood (Yorks) looking south-west in summer 1972. The station closed to passengers in 1951 and to goods in 1964. The up (Manchester-bound) platform used to be immediately ahead on the near side of the line. On the far side is Eastwood Emergency Frame and, beyond it, the signal box and station building. The box is still in use at this time but would be decommissioned in 1973 when Preston Power Signal Box took control of this section of line and dismantled soon afterwards. The derelict station building was demolished within two years'

Class 144 DMU No. 144 002 forming the 13.26 ex-Manchester Victoria to Leeds is passing the site of Eastwood (Yorks) station on 14 May 2015. In this northward view the up (Manchester-bound) platform was formerly to the right of the tracks and the signal box stood in the masonry-lined recess to the left. Until the 1960s a siding occupied the space to the left of the train.

Class 144 DMU No. 144 002 forming the 13.26 ex-Manchester Victoria to Leeds is approaching; its next call will be Hebden Bridge.

On 14 May 2015 a Class 158 DMU forms the 13.26 ex-Leeds for Manchester Victoria. It is passing the site of the up (Manchester-bound) platform of Eastwood (Yorks) station which closed to passengers in 1951. The former down platform was behind the camera and the station building was immediately left, set back against the steep slope of the cutting. A pedestrian crossing is provided; in earlier times it could be used by vehicles too.

The site of the station building at Eastwood (Yorks), seen in May 2015. It stood adjacent to the vertical rock and retaining wall on the north-west side of the railway. The level crossing is now available only for pedestrians; earlier photographs show that vehicles could cross the line here.
