ETHELFLEDA BRIDGE, RUNCORN
(pedestrian footpath)

Looking south from the footpath into Runcorn in 1956. The footpath can be seen leading away to Runcorn at the far right of the picture. The area of water below is not the River Mersey. It is the Manchester Ship Canal which was completed in 1893. The building to the left of the picture is Abel's boat yard. In the centre the foundations of the road bridge are being dug. The yard was closed with the building of the bridge; it was the last ship yard in Runcorn.
