The SS ‘Hythe’ is seen at the landing stage at Folkestone Harbour c1906 while the SS ‘Onward’ departs for Boulogne. The SS ‘Hythe’ was built for the South Eastern & Chatham Railway by William Denny & Brothers of Dumbarton in 1905. After a short career as a cross-channel ferry the vessel was requisitioned by the Royal Navy in 1914 and became HMS ‘Hythe’ and was converted to a minesweeper at Scapa Flow. While in later use as a troop carrier she was run down by HMS ‘Sarnia’ off Cape Helles in the Dardanelles on 28 October 1915 and sank with the loss of 155 lives.
