Folkestone Harbour station in May 2014. Varga Weisz’s five-headed sculpture ‘Rug People' is in the foreground. The history of the station, especially bringing WW1 soldiers to the harbour to embark on ships for France, as well as the station being the terminus for the Orient Express until 2008, provided the major inspiration for Varga Weisz’s work. The sculpture appeared during the 2011 Folkestone Triennial when artists were invited to use the town as their ‘canvas’, utilising public spaces to create striking new pieces that reflected issues affecting both the town and the wider world. In the background to the east of the station the coastguard station is seen; this was demolished in 2014.
