An aerial view of the Warren work site in 1953. The 1948 work is the rectangular area nearest the camera, the tapered part being added in 1951-52. The outer walls comprise concrete blocks, cast on site and joined with old rails. Rock from Meldon Quarry was brought from Devon and hand packed as a base layer. Onto this, a weight of some 43,000 tons of chalk was placed. Warren Halt was retained for use by staff, and can just be made out top left.
