COPY PIT SUMMIT AND THE COLLIERIES FORMERLY SERVED BY THE COPY PIT ROUTE

[Source: Alan Young]

Looking south-east from Burnley Road bridge as DMU 156 486 approaches. It is operating the Kirkby (dep 09.42) to Blackburn service via Todmorden Curve which reopened in 2015. The wide level space to the left of the train was formerly occupied by the Up Loop that extended to Portsmouth (Lancs). The dramatic setting of the Copy Pit route can be appreciated. There is no stream occupying the valley in the foreground, which is the watershed between the Lancashire Calder, which rises behind the photographer, and the Yorkshire Calder which occupies the sunlit valley ahead. The present-day ‘dry valley’ at Copy Pit results from ancient glacial action and erosion by meltwater.
