Looking east in 1948 a tram is passing the Wellington Street frontage of Gateshead East station. The tram system closed in 1951. Note the contrast in the colour of stone-work, showing two phases of the Hills Street entrance. The blackened stone is the original (adapted) building of pre-1880s, whilst the lighter masonry indicates the truncated alteration of 1925.
