Station Name: GATESHEAD EAST

A3 Pacific No.60082 ‘Neil Gow’ draws a parcels train over the High Level Bridge across the River Tyne in the early 1960s. The up platform of Gateshead East station is in the background with an LNER running-in nameboard – soon to be replaced with a BR(NE) vitreous enamel one. The train is being routed via Gateshead West and the East Coast main line. The Gresley-designed 4-6-2 loco was built at the North British Locomotive Company works in Glasgow for the LNER in 1924. In January 1943 it was rebuilt from Class A1 (10). At Nationalisation the loco was stabled at 52B, Heaton shed, but when withdrawn from service in September 1963 its shed was Gateshead, 52A. In February 1964 the loco was cut up at Darlington North Road.
