Station Name: GATESHEAD EAST

[Source: Alan Young and Jonathan Clark]

The Castle Keep immediately east of Newcastle Central station, from which this photograph is taken, has a commanding view over the station as well as across the Tyne; little wonder that the North Eastern Railway considered – and rejected - using its strategic position for a signal box. In August 1958 an EMU from South Shields is seen at the far end of the High Level Bridge having called at Gateshead East, whose roofing can be seen behind the train and to its left. The roofing of Gateshead West station is to its right and, beyond and extending to the edge of the photograph, the buildings are of the Gateshead railway engineering works which include the site of Gateshead Greenesfield terminus which closed to passengers in 1850.
