Station Name: GATESHEAD WEST

[Source: Alan Young and Jonathan Clark]

Looking north from the northern end of the up platform of Gateshead West station in July 1988. The East station platforms were formerly to the right of the picture. The tracks in the foreground are curving towards the High Level Bridge which crosses the River Tyne gorge. Newcastle’s Castle Keep and St Nicholas’ Cathedral tower are seen beyond the bridge. Although indistinct, it is just possible to see the black-and-white metal NER trespassing notice on the left and just beyond the signal gantry.
