Station Name: GATESHEAD WEST

[Source: Alan Young and Jonathan Clark]

Gateshead West station, looking north-east on the up platform c1930s. The buildings in the right foreground and on the left are part of the railway workshops. The pitched profile of the trainshed will be noted. Accompanied by the enamel ‘Virol’ advertising signs, which were prominently displayed on many stations until the mid twentieth century is an LNER running-in board which reads ‘Gateshead West’. Those on the East station gave the name only as ‘Gateshead’
