Station Name: HALWILL

[Source: Martin James]

A general view of Halwill looking towards Meldon Junction and Okehampton. The main part of the station is seen here in its final form so the view is from late Southern Railway or BR days. The level crossing is closed to the railway and the only hint of any activity is the van in the bay platform although little, if anything, appears to be ongoing therewith. The water column is of note as by this time it had taken on the same hideous appearance of that on the up platform. The 'drum' object around the lower part of the column is presumably for insulation purposes as no evidence of braziers is obvious in photographs showing the columns in this form but this may depend upon time of year. On the Up platform, left, the lighter area of surface and facing may indicate alterations which took place to lengthen the platform, the lighter area being the site of the original ramp, but the darker stonework nearer the camera suggests otherwise. More likely is the lighter area being connected with changes to the points rodding and signal wires but without firm evidence speculation can last into eternity.
