Station Name: HASSENDEAN

A northbound freight passing through Hassendean station in the 1960s. Seen here is A1 Pacific, 'Saint Johnstoun'. Built in December 1949 at Doncaster works, the last of a class of 49, this Peppercorn- designed loco was allocated to 64B, Haymarket shed. With less than 14 years service, this loco was withdrawn from 64A, St Margarets shed on 28.10.1963 and cut up at BR's Inverurie works in February 1964. None of the original A1s are preserved, although there was an attempt to save the last of the class in service, 60145, 'Saint Mungo' but it failed and it too was withdrawn and scrapped in 1966. The gap has now been filled with the new build A1, 'Tornado', 60163
