Hebden Bridge Gallery 3: July 1980 - August 2009

The frontage of Hebden Bridge station looking south in July 1980. The sandstone structure has been cleaned to remove almost a century’s accumulation of grime. The design is given a certain distinction by the unusual Mansard roof pierced by three dormers. The square opening at the near end of the building gave access to the parcel office; today (2016) this section of the building is a café and the opening has been adapted to form a window while a doorway has been added immediately to the left.

On 21 July 1984 a Class 110 DMU ‘Calder Valley’ set to Leeds is calling at Hebden Bridge. The station has a fine array of pre-Grouping signs as well as an attractive floral display.

A Class 110 ‘Calder Valley’ DMU approaches the down platform of Hebden Bridge station on 21 July 1984. The up platform, from which this photo is taken, displays several Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway signs, including the splendid running-in nameboard in the foreground. British Rail has relaxed its ‘Corporate Identity’ regulations to permit brown and white, even on the modern nameplate. Note the variety of colours on the pillars and brackets supporting the platform roofing allowing the wheel motifs in the spandrels to be emphasised.

Looking south-east on the up platform of Hebden Bridge station in October 1991. The restoration of the station’s Victorian character has now extended to replacing the 1970s electric lamp with a Sugg imitation gas lamp, albeit with an electric bulb and mounted on the ridiculously tall standard. Co-author of the ‘Disused Stations’ articles on Gateshead East and West, Jonathan Clark, is in the foreground.

In August 2009 Hebden Bridge station’s down platform retains its Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway signage, now repainted in black and white – but the reverse of the livery seen in 1978.

On 1 August 2009 Class 155 DMU No.155 346 forms the 17.00 departure from Hebden Bridge for Leeds. The nameboard in the foreground reflects Northern Rail and West Yorkshire Metro interests.

Amidst the Victorian structures and fittings at Hebden Bridge, this 21st century vending machine may be attractive to this hungry or thirsty passenger, but visually it jars with its surroundings. The photograph is on the down platform on 1 August 2009.

The frontage of Hebden Bridge station looking south on 18 August 2009. The forecourt, formerly a roadway, has been paved with flagstones and given seating and floral decoration; the visual improvement is enormous. The former parcel office in the single-storey wing (right) has been converted into a café, involving the installation of a new doorway and alteration of the nearest
opening into a window

On 18 August 2009 DMU 150 203 is entering Hebden Bridge station on its way to Manchester. The signal box was constructed by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway in 1891 and, together with the passenger station which was rebuilt at the same time it enjoys Grade II listed status. The stairs and lavatory projecting from the box are recent additions; the external design of the lavatory is sensitive and looks as if it was part of the original structure.
