Station Name: HESSAY

Hessay station, looking east in March 2008. The traditional timber crossing gates have been replaced with ones of metal construction since the photos of 1998. The station building has been smartened up, with rendering removed from the north-west wall exposing the original brickwork, and a brick porch has replaced the timber version. The old waiting rooms are also looking more attractive, with cleaned brickwork and an LNER style signal-box nameplate affixed to the wall. The contrast in height is clear between the low platform in the foreground and the conventional one beyond the ramp. Since 1972 the line has been operated as a single track between Poppleton and Hammerton stations, and the up track was removed by May 1973.
