Station Name: JESMOND

Jesmond station, looking north from the up platform in June 1969. The elegant Victorian buildings, dating from the 1860s, were intended to appeal to the affluent passengers who used this station. They would have recognised the station a hundred years later, so little had changed. The display of lupins is an attractive feature of the down platform, but in former years greater care was lavished on the floral displays at the station which regularly won ‘best kept station’ certificates. By 1969 diesel multiple units had replaced the electric trains and the electric third rails had been removed.
