Station Name: LITTLE MILL

[Source: Alan Young]

This disused lime kiln was built in the Littlemill limestone quarries in the first half of the nineteenth century, replacing an earlier structure. The ‘new’ kiln is one of the largest ever to be constructed in Great Britain and it remained in service, roasting limestone for agricultural use, until shortly after World War II. It is now a Grade II* listed building. Nature is now reclaiming the former quarries, which at one time had internal railways and some sidings reached from the main line. A detailed history of the quarries and kilns can be read in Roger Jermy’s ‘Northern Northumberland’s minor railway Vol 4: Limestone industry lines’, pp61-78. This photo was taken in May 2009; several years later the structure was temporarily encased in scaffolding to enable essential repairs to be undertaken.
