Looking north at Liverpool Central stations northern line platforms in May 2011. To the right is platform 1 and to left platform 2. A Merseyrail Electrics service waits to depart for Ormskirk at platform 1. The picture was taken during one of the stations few quieter periods. In 2011 it was the busiest station on the Merseyrail network and one of the busiest in the Country outside of London. Network Rail had identified it as a station in need of improvement. The narrowness of the island
platform was of major concern.
