A Southport service formed of a 1938 built LMS class 502 EMU leaves Liverpool Exchange in April 1977. By this time only four platforms were in use. This picture illustrates clearly the shorter section of station roof that was brought about through the station being bombed in 1941. The section of roof that would have stood directly above the EMU in the picture was so severely damaged that it was decided that it should be demolished.
