Station Name: LIVERPOOL EXCHANGE

Looking away from the buffer stops in April 1977 when only four platforms were still in use. The two platforms to the right of the picture were, at this time, used for diesel services to Bolton and Manchester Victoria via Wigan Wallgate. They retained their live rails, though, to give operational flexibility. The two platforms to the left were used by the frequent electric services that ran to both Southport and Ormskirk. The electric service to Southport dated back to 1904.
