The last scheduled steam-hauled passenger trains on the British Railways’ network ran between Liverpool Exchange and Preston in July and into August 1968. By that time the motive power tended to be in a poor condition, as illustrated by this Class 5MT (Black 5) at Liverpool Exchange heading a Glasgow train during the last days of steam. The steam locomotive would have hauled the train only as far as Preston where a diesel would take over.

Looking south along platform 5 into the trainshed at Liverpool Exchange in August 1973. The lines to the left serving platform 5 and 4 (far left) had only recently been electrified. The reason for electrifying them at this late date was because platforms 8, 9 and 10, which had been electrified, were taken out of use on 6 May 1973. The line-up of rolling stock was typical for the 1973-to-closure period. The DMU to the left formed a Bolton service: the service almost always used platform 4 at this time. Platform 5 was used by Ormskirk services, leaving 6 and 7 to Southport trains. To the right it is noticeable that the station roof does not extend as far as that over platforms 4 and 5 - a result of
bomb damage in World War II.

The buffer stops at Liverpool Exchange looking east on 3 January 1976. This was the period when the station had been reduced to four platforms. Three ex-LMS EMUs and a British Railways Derby built class 108 DMU are seen standing in the station.

Looking south into the station from its north end in 1978. The picture gives a good overall view and shows six of the original ten platforms. To the right, on the platform is a fenced set of steps leading via a subway to Pall Mall, on the eastern side of the station.

Looking north in October 2010 along the vehicle access road that ran between platforms 3 and 4 at Liverpool Exchange. The kerb edges formed the eastern side of the road. Platform 3 was to the right of the picture and 4 to the left.
