bridge_old2.jpg) On 23 August 1964 the 3.30 pm Southport Chapel Street to Preston service arrives at Longton Bridge station. The WLR station building is clearly shown. The train was being hauled by ex-LMS Stanier 4MT locomotive number 42456 with steam to spare! Built by the LMS at Derby works in August 1936, this 2-6-4 tank, was in service for over 28years when it was withdrawn on 24.4.1965 and broken up by Cashmores of Great Bridge.
