Station Name: LUDDENDENFOOT

An ex-LNWR ‘Prince of Wales’ class 4-6-0 working an up express passenger train is taking water from Luddendenfoot troughs. The five-digit ‘2xxxx’ number, which is not clear enough to read, coupled with the absence of a loco name, suggests that she is (former LNWR numbers and names) either 867 ‘Condor’, 2339 ‘Samson’, 417 ‘Atlas’ or 849 ‘Arethusa’. The date of the photograph is not known, but most of this class were scrapped during the 1930s, only two surviving into British Railways’ ownership; the last survivor bowed out in January 1949.
