Station Name: MARCHWOOD

[Source: Nick Catford]

Marchwood station on 7 May 1978, looking towards Fawley. The military line branched off to the left some 300yd beyond the station and from the down line; visible on a larger version of this image, the junction is by the trees in the right background and just beyond the dogleg in the Fawley branch tracks. On the platform, the rather nice hexagonal lampshades are still in situ. Part way along the platform, the rails can be seen to change from bullhead to flat bottom type. This 'mix and match' was common on the Fawley branch and indeed elsewhere. On the forecourt stands a Bristol MW/ECW coach. It is in National Bus Company (NBC) livery but carries no obvious fleet name, suggesting that it was in private ownership by this time. Given that Fawley is close to Southampton, one might expect this vehicle to have been of Hants & Dorset origin. However, notwithstanding Hants & Dorset changing from green to red livery at stage, from what little can be seen of the registration number the last two letters appear to be 'TW' which would indicate the vehicle began life with green-liveried Eastern National.
