Station Name: MARCHWOOD

[Source: Nick Catford]

Marchwood station looking towards Fawley in January 2006. The military spur can just be made out branching off through the trees just prior to the signal gantry in the distance. One way wonder what was the reason for the peculiar track layout. The line was a straight section of single track until WWII when the goods loop and spur to the military port was built. The straight section of the loop seen in the distance beyond the dogleg was originally the running line and ran straight into the platform and this can be determined from its alignment with the present platform road. The original running line was slewed and connected to the [new] loop while what is now the running line beyond the station, on which is located the junction for the military port, was incorporated into what had been a siding.
