Station Name: MARCHWOOD

Marchwood station forecourt, or perhaps more precisely what was the forecourt, in November 2014. This photograph makes an interesting comparison with the similar view taken in 2006. Changes, blue wheelie bin excepted, are additional brickwork to the end of the SR hut on the right and less undergrowth on left due to encroachment of housing and its associated gardens. It is often the case that subsequent to a railway closing, or closing to passengers, new housing appears and in a few cases this has been largely responsible for reopenings. Passenger service reintroductions have been mooted for the Fawley branch but what will happen in the long term remains to be seen. By rail (and road) the route to Southampton is somewhat circuitous while Fawley station is now within the refinery and Hythe and its surrounds have a shortcut via the Hythe ferry. Thus, new housing or not, the business case for reopening the branch to passengers has to be questionable.
