Middleton Towers Station Gallery 2: September 1968 - August 1990

A Metro-Cammell 79xxx Lightweight DMU is seen approaching Middleton Towers en route for Kings Lynn on 3 September 1968, a few days before the line closed. The DMU is passing the site of an exchange siding for a quarry tramway and later cattle pens.

The same DMU is seen leaving Middleton Towers station on 3 September 1968. The end of a rake of sand wagons is seen on the right. The one at far right is a 24 ton COVHOP. There were several versions of these wagons and the roof detail of this indicates it's a Diagram 1/210 variant. I think they were 24 ton. To its left is a HJV 24½ ton hopper. They were used for iron ore, limestone, sand etc.

Looking south-east towards Dereham from the Station Road level crossing at Middleton Towers in January 1972. A rake of sand wagons stands in the former goods siding behind the platform. The track seems a little rusty and probably doesn't see as much traffic as it does today.

Middleton Towers station remained outwardly in good order when visited on 23 October 1976.  Passenger traffic had ceased running 8 years before.  The signal box had gone as had the sidings west of the crossing. The grounded goods van which is seen in many of the pictures appears to be an ex-GER 10 ton ventilated van.

When viewed from the Leziate road on 23 October 1976, eight years after passenger services ended,  Middleton Towers station might have been waiting its next train such was its appearance.  There were low-sided mineral wagons in the former general goods siding, serving the busy sand trade.

Looking north-east towards Middleton Towers station in August 1990. The condition of the rails indicates that the track is still regularly used.

Looking south-east at Middleton Towers station in August 1990. The stationmaster's house is clearly occupied but the other buildings are disused. Note the step in the platform. The low section is part of the original platform. When the platform was raised a section in front of the booking office door was retained at the original height to avoid having to raise the door.
